A matte finish is not a coating you can simply polish back. The wrong cloth, a dab of wax or one strong cleaner can leave shiny patches or fine scratches that stay for good. This guide lists the precautions to take when cleaning a matte or matt helmet, what to avoid and what is safe to use.

Why a matte helmet needs extra care
Matte paint is designed to scatter light instead of reflecting it. Anything that smooths, fills or rubs the surface changes how it reflects light, and shiny patches usually cannot be undone. Fine scratches also show up more on a dark, flat finish.
9 precautions for cleaning a matte helmet
1. Read the manual first
Makers give different advice, and some sell matte-safe cleaners. Their instructions come before any general tip, including ours.
2. Never use wax, polish or shine sprays
Car polish, wax, silicone sprays and plastic-shine products are made to add gloss. On a matte shell they leave glossy streaks.
3. Keep solvents and strong cleaners away
Petrol, thinner, alcohol-based cleaners, bleach and harsh household cleaners can damage the paint, the shell and the foam inside. Mild soap and water is enough.
4. Do not wipe off dry dust
Dust on the surface acts like fine sandpaper when wiped dry. Dampen the cloth first, or rinse the dust off.
5. Do not scrub or rub in circles
Dab and wipe gently in one direction with a soft microfibre cloth. Skip scouring pads, stiff brushes and paper towels.
6. Use lukewarm water, not hot water or a jet wash
Hot water and strong pressure can push water into the vents and foam and weaken the glue.
7. Never dry it with heat
A hair dryer, heater or long direct sun can damage the foam and the glue. Let the helmet air dry in the shade.
8. Treat the visor separately
Do not use glass cleaner or anything with ammonia on the visor, and do not wipe it with a rough cloth.
9. Be careful with stickers and tape
Adhesive removers and sharp tools can mark a matte shell. Ask the maker how to take a sticker off safely.
Safe vs avoid
Safe to use
- Lukewarm water
- Mild soap or baby shampoo
- Soft microfibre cloths
- Dabbing and wiping in one direction
- Air drying in the shade
- A matte-safe cleaner approved by your helmet maker
Avoid
- Hot water or a pressure washer
- Solvents, alcohol, bleach and strong household cleaners
- Paper towels, scouring pads and rough sponges
- Scrubbing in circles
- Hair dryer, heater or direct sun
- Wax, polish and silicone or shine sprays
What if you have already used polish or wax?
Stop using it. Shiny patches on a matte finish usually cannot be reversed at home, and buffing or sanding them can make the damage worse. Ask your helmet maker or an authorised service centre what they advise.
Precautions for the inside
- Do not soak a liner that is fixed in place. Wipe it with a cloth dampened in soapy water, then plain water.
- Skip bleach and harsh detergents on the liner and cheek pads.
- Let everything dry fully before you put the helmet back together, and never use heat to speed it up.
Store it the right way
A matte shell scuffs easily, so keep it off the floor, shoe racks and shelves. Do not hang it on a bike mirror or seal it in a plastic bag while it is damp. A wall-mounted holder is the simplest fix. The SKELMET helmet wall mount sits inside the helmet, on the liner and not on the paint, and fits full-face, open-face and modular helmets.
FAQ
Can I use wax or polish on a matte helmet?
No. Wax, polish and silicone sprays are made to add shine, so on a matte finish they can leave glossy or patchy marks that are hard to remove. Clean a matte helmet with mild soap and water only. If you want a product for it, choose one that clearly says it is safe for matte finishes, and check your helmet maker's advice first.
Can I use a helmet cleaner spray on a matte helmet?
Only if the label says it is safe for matte finishes and your helmet maker allows it. Spray it onto the cloth, not straight onto the helmet. If you are unsure, use mild soap and lukewarm water.
Is it safe to wash a matt helmet with soap and water?
Yes. Lukewarm water, a mild soap or baby shampoo and a soft microfibre cloth are the safest way to clean a matt helmet. Dab and wipe gently, rinse the cloth often and let the helmet air dry.
